Whether you are a leader of one or 10,000, everyone has a why – a deep-seated purpose, cause, or belief that is the source of passion and inspiration.
When you think of the leaders you know and admire most, chances are they have “a way of being” as a leader. Their leadership style is conscious and intentional.
The most effective leaders are able to articulate the essence of who they are as a leader. This description is sometimes referred to as their north star, their guiding way of authentically leading, or their conscious leader statement.
As a culture consultant and executive coach, my conscious leader statement is:
“To be fully present and use all of my talents to develop conscious cultures and leadership resulting in everyone becoming better and enjoying more.”
My conscious leader statement reminds me every day of who I am and what my world of work is. It is my passion, and I lead from it. It tells my clients and potential clients who I am.
Defining your conscious leader statement becomes valuable when you are able to:
- Reflect and determine your uniqueness and passion
- Articulate your statement to others
- Develop yourself toward it
I appreciate the quote from Peggy Johnson, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Microsoft, on the importance of being an authentic leader and having a brand of leadership.
“I’m naturally more introverted, but early in my career I was told that be a leader I have to speak up and be more assertive in meetings. My breakthrough moment came when I decided that, for better or worse, I was going to be myself at work. That’s when my career started to take off. I learned that who I am matters more than how I’m supposed to be, and that to succeed on my terms, I had to define my own brand of leadership.”
When I work with leaders in small, mid-sized, and large organizations as an executive coach, the leader often discovers their unique conscious leadership brand. In addition to discovering their natural and authentic leadership approach, the coaching work covers development paths like:
- Building great teams
- Developing and empowering staff
- Creating accountability
- Moving from doing to leading
- Inspiring, not requiring
- Speaking through story telling
- Sharing more authenticity
- Developing deeper emotional connection and intelligence
- Demonstrating executive presence
Which themes resonate with you? What themes would you want to work on if you were to hire a coach?
Imagine how you would want to be described in a conference room when senior leaders are discussing whether you are ready to increase your leadership role. What conscious leadership brand do you want them to think of right away?
I invite leaders at every level to reflect on what their best authentic leader and development path looks like. Take the steps necessary to become that conscious leader.
